I am planning to buy an external HDD (~250gb) with USB 2.0 connection. Could someone please answer some questions regarding this?

1. Will the external HDD also need to be plugged into a AC adaptor for it to work?
2. Is it noisy and does it overheat easily?
3. Would running video files directly off the external HDD work via USB2? (as in is it smooth or laggy when watching)

Thanks

1. Yes
2. Didn't check temps yet, but I guess it will be fine. Noise is not annoying at all. I have a 80GB Hitachi external now. Makes about the same amount of noise as the 160GB Maxtor I used before. Not loud at all.
3. Will work fine.

There is a possibility of some overheating, however the enclosure I bought has a fan in it. :)

If you want a cheaper option, you can buy an Internal 3.5" SATA HD, get an External Enclosure with Internal SATA connector and External Firewire and USB. Thats what I did.

Cheaper option would be to go Internal IDE and just External USB.

Because buying an External HD with the drive already in it is usally more expensive, IMO.

Newegg's search option for external enclosures yields alot of choices.

Search Configuration Here

Hope It helps
