You only need to set it as slave if it is IDE.

to elaborate on that point, if it is IDE, there should be a group of pins on the back of the drive, usually with MA SL and CS written over it. To set it to slave, just put a jumper on the pins with SL written over them.

However, as stated, if the drive is SATA (which I strongly suspect it is) then all you need to do is plug in a sata cable and power cord. No other configuration needed.

theres no power connector on the back of the external? it is sata i had the cord plugged in but theres nothing for power..? wtf

The drive itself, not the casing. What kind of external is it?

i know lol i took it out of the casing and theres no like.. spot for the power cord? its a Comstar case? but the drive itself is a western digital...

The hard drive has no spot for a power cable..? Neither SATA nor 4 pin molex?
