external hard drive

I have recently put together an 80G external usb hard drive. But I have found the fan is very loud. A friend of mine built a similar one but his doesn't have a fan. Can anyone tell me if disabling fan is wise.

It's not as good for it. You could find another fan of the same size that is quiter, and splice the new one in. Airflow is your friend. It will probably be okay, but there's no reason to take it out.

My laptop's 80GB HD is pretty much full. I was thinking of buying an external (200+ GB) HD. I looked at some, but they were too expensive. I know that you can buy some kind of case and then buy a cheaper internal HD and make it work by connecting it via USB cable.

Question is: What exactly do I need to buy to make this work? I don't care about the looks, all I want is cheap storage for my files, movies, etc.
