Default External Hard Drive

Hi! I'm looking to buy an external hard drive, but I'm not quite sure whether to buy one or assemble my own?...It seems a bit cheaper to assemble my own, but is it the better option? As far as buying one, I've been looking at the Western Digital passport 500gb. Is there anyone that owns this hard drive or would recommend it?

Is the difference in transfer speed very noticible between usb and firewire? I plan on putting adobe software onto the external hard drive because it is taking up so much room on my laptop! Also, if building an external hard drive is the way to go...can anyone recommend a good external case? I've been searching newegg, but there are so many options, and I'm not quite sure which to choose. Thanks!!

it seems like assembling your own may cost more.
