I have a new XP Media Center machine. I also have an older Windows 98 machine that has files I want to keep on the hard drive. This is an IDE hard drive and the new machine is SATA. XP is NTFS and Windows 98 is FAT32.

Can I put the old hard drive into an External enclosure and read the files and store them on the SATA drive?

I'd like to reformat the old hard drive to use as backup if possible.

Thanks for you help.

Tom

PS If doable, any recommendations on external enclosures are also appreciated.

Just connect the computers through a router and transfer through a home network.

Otherwise, yes. External HDD's connect through USB so they can be universally read by any computer regardless the manufacturer.
