Default explain to me different kinds of expansion slots?

Why are there different types of expansion slots and what are they used for?

My motherboard has these:

two PCI
one PCI express X 1
two PCI express X 16

I'm asking because the two cards I plan to use are pci and my 2 pci slots are crowded down at the bottom with the usb connection. I may need a sound card but all the ones on Newegg I see are pci, and I have no more pci slots available.

/**-look for a pci x1 soundcard there a little bit smaller in space

thats just my opinion

pci -older technology and its peak is 133 mb/s
pci x1 -newer technology max 250 mb/s
pci x16 -transfers 4gb/s

That's clear enough. It's a new motherboard sporting the latest techno slots so I can buy more expensive cards.

This may be wishful thinking, but is it at all possible for a pci card to use a more advanced slot like pci X 1?
