Exchanging CPUs in common Dell PCs

Hi, I'm unfamiliar with CPU installations and would like to know if I could take a 2.7 Ghz CPU from a Dell 4600 and put it in a Dell 4550 and vice versa. Doing so physically would be quite simple, but I'd like to know if it would work or if there is, perhaps, a way to do so. Thank you.
