Just to answer your question, I could get 4 xeon 2.2 ghz processors for about $300. give or take a few.

well id get the AMD 3700+ and since its San diego lots of L2 and highly overclockable^^.

2500k @ 4.5Ghz max: 81C idle 33C

unless your going to be doing some heavy rendering or something you will be better off with the new AMD. unlike Opterons, Xeons don't adapt well to playing games. however if you could get 4 Xeon 2.2ghz's up and running and you would like that it doesn't sound like a bad idea. just be careful because it sounds like a fire hazard.
