Is there any advantage of having 2 or 3 hdd's?
I currently have a 500gb in my new rig and feel that its plenty of room atm. Curious as to why people feel they need 2 x 1tb hdd's?

Different people have different storage requirements - that's the short answer. Media takes a huge amount of space and backups take a lot. RAID uses 2 or more drives depending on the level you choose. For example, I have one server which has two drives but only about 60GB of usable space, my other server has 8 drives and just under 1TB of usable space.

raid 1, backup - 2nd hdd is mirroring the 1st one, in case your hdd dies, you don't lose anything

raid 0, you store half the information on each drive, so everything is faster.

storage, maybe they like taking videos and storing them on the hard drive for fast access.
audio/images may also take up fair amount of space.

Multiple drives are good incase you get hd issues.

I keep my files on 1 drive and OS on another. This way if either a drive or A virus gets in, I don't lose everything.
