Dual Channel RAM

Well i need to upgrade my laptop. My laptop alreadly has 2*256 DDR RAM, and i would want to replace one stick of 256 RAM to 512 , that is 768 MB RAM altogether.

My question is that since the two sticks of RAM are different in size, will the Dual Channel Function be terminated ? Will that boost my laptop's performance or not ? And in your opinion, should i get 2 sticks of 512 instead ?

You definately should get 2x512 instead. Adding 256mb of ram and diabling dual channel operation will help you in some aspects, and hurt you in others. You're sacrificing speeds for space. It'll probably speed you up in memory hungry apps, but slow you down in ones that you want quicker response time in. If you go with 2x512, you win both ways.
