Do I need more RAM?

My computer is a five-year-old Gateway E4100 desktop with a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor. I find that when I'm running AVG anti-virus software (sometimes with Spybot and Disk Defrag running simultaneously), my browser is painfully slow to open and/or surf. If I were to upgrade from my present 1 GB RAM to 2.5 GB, do you think I'd see any improvement?

P.S. Please don't get too technical, since my computer knowledge is moderate at best.

You probably wouldn't see much. It eats up CPU cycles like no tomorrow. A CPU upgrade would be much more beneficial

Agreed. Upgrading to a core 2 duo processor is very cheap these days, definitely worth it for you.
