Question Difference between AGP 2x/4x and 4x/8x

Hi Everybody,
I'm looking for a reasonably cheap graphics card to use untill i build my new system. I have AGP but when i looked in Newegg I saw AGP 2x/4x and AGP 4x/8x. Whats the difference and how do i know which one(s) i can or can't get. Also, If you have any suggestions on cards, it will be used for games like BF1942 and Halo.

I believe that the difference is mainly the bandwidth that is allowed between them, but you can't really tell the difference on gamex between 4x and 8x.

Ive been reading online and the different kinds (2x, 4x, 8x) have different voltages and so you can't use one in the wrong slot. does anybody know how to figure out what type of slot i have? I have a card that used to be in the port if that helps.
