You're really going to need to put together a new system. The Dell Dimension 2400 is limited to Single core processors 3.066ghz and lower, it doesn't have an AGP or PCIx slot, and it's limited to PC 2700 DDR 333mhz.

There is no way you're ever going to play any of the newer games on this system.
You need to come up with a better budget, and for around $350-$400 you can put together a nice system.

Rich is right, mate. The older Dells worked for surfing the net and banging out office documents, but not much else.

You can buy it online, or purchase it at a local shop. The best bet is to buy it online and piece it together yourself. If you come back with a number for your budget, we can help you figure something out

simple college desktop computer

Check out this thread, there are quite a few suggestions for this price range. One of them is even a decent little prebuilt system for $300

Here's one build, but it doesn't include an HD (this is where your new 500GB comes in); also doesn't include opticals or OS. You could get the opticals from your old Dell... and OS well.... you think of that!

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL - Desktop Memory
Newegg.com - Antec Basiq BP500U 500W Continuous Power ATX12V Version 2.01 Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100245HDMI Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
Newegg.com - RAIDMAX APEX ATX-802B Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

should handle most games out there.

Nice build.

Swap out the CPU/mobo combo for this one and $21 more and get a quad.
