What is considered a decent amount of RAM on a computer now days? Mine has 1.5 GB DDR2.

Decent? Probably 4GB. That's generally somewhere between 'plenty' and 'enough' for most people. 8GB would be high-end, 12GB+ being enthusiast/professional.

Why do you ask?

If you ever build your own computer, you will most likely need DDR3. Not DDR2, so any upgrades you do now, is not worth it.

DDR2 tends to be more expensive than DDR3.

Per GB, no. Single DDR2 sticks are actually less expensive than dual DDR2/3.

For the same amount of memory, all I see most of the time is DDR3 being cheaper than DDR2.

Most of the time, yes. So buying an upgrade of DDR2 and soon wanting to build your own system, is waste.

Right, it's just you said DDR2 is cheaper, implying that that was the sensible option.

"Some" DDR2 single sticks are cheaper a 2GB. Didn't say "all".
