CPU Fan - Socket Types

Can a CPU Fan for socket 754 work for a 775 processor? On a related question what makes the CPU Fans work specific processors, isn't it just the size of the plate touching the processor?

The fan itself, sure, but probably not the heatsink attached to it.
So you can always take the fan off of an old heatsink and reuse it, but the heatsink itself probably wouldn't fit, dependant on it's stated spcifications.

Many aftermarket heatsinks are made to fit several different sockets, but a stock cooler definitely won't work.

if you look on a mobo and oyu look at the area around a processor there are 4 holes. depending on the socket those holes will be different spaces apart/different sizes.
