Default CPU compatibility

Basically I have an Acer EM61SM/EM61PM motherboard.

It currently has an AMD Sempron 3500+ Processor. Socket AM2 (940). 90nm technology.

I'm Looking to upgrade this to a decent dual core processor, say 3.0GHz. But Im not sure if there will be any compatibility issues. I originally thought that any AM2 processor would be fine, no matter what the GHz. I still believe this to be true.
But after researching I have found that AM2+ processors can be used in AM2 slots, but some motherboards apparently have compatibilty problems, or limitations to the processor itself.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if AM2+ processors will work in my motherboards AM2 slot, and would there be any drawbacks.
For example would there be so many drawbacks from using an AM2+ processor in my AM2 slot that it would actually be worth using an AM2 processor with the same GHz?

Finally if you could recommend any processors it would be great. Thankyou.
