Compatability

I want to build a computer. I know how to connect which wires to what. I know how to put pieces in the case. How do i know if the pieces are compatable?

just check the specs on the motherboard, everything else should fall into place

I am brand new to this, just want a better computer than my current one. This will sound dumb, but what are specs?

Just type the motherboard you want or have on the web and some sites will give you specifications. It will tell you things like "compatible with pc2100, pc2700, pc3200 etc."So this means you would wanna get ram thats pc2100, pc2700, or pc3200. It will also say the socket, such as socket A (462pin) or Socket 939, this means you want a processor that is that socket.
