Here you go:

My dad wants to upgrade his computer. But he's cheap, and he only wants to spend $170 MAX. Here's what he needs:

Motherboard (w/ AGP slot)
Processor + heatsink + fan + thermal paste
Memory
Case

Since he doesn't like to upgrade too often, I'm thinking he should get a 64 bit processor for Windows Vista when it comes out. So, maybe a Sempron 64?

What are your suggestions?

I'm sorry but i dont think its possible to get a computer for 140 bucks man plus fo it to run Vista when it comes out no way in hell that can happen with a 140 bucks dude. Only thing i can say is to try Ebay and see what you get from that.

Whats the point in getting an absolute budget computer anyway? Whats your dad going to use it for?

From the few details of your post, this system will be moderate to high end, as far as the cost for motherboard cpu and 1 gig of ram, Ill average at 350 for reasonably high end parts. I built a great system last year for my parents, had the tower, a cdrw drive and power scource, cost 600, parts suplied from a great suplier; mind you, this system is faily good.

that means you will need a 30 dollar mobo a 30 dollar processor a 10 dollar case, 20 dollar ram and a 50 dollar video card

140 dollars woot woot

Guys, please re-read my post. All he needs is a motherboard, CPU, ram, and case. We have everything else. And $170, not $140.

Also, all it will be for is e-mail, word processing, and maybe some video editing. He just needs something that'll run XP and some basic programs.

But if you're not going to give any suggestions, then forget it. I don't even know why I asked you guys.

I'm thinking $30 for ram, $25 for case, $50 for mobo, and $65 for CPU.

i could fit a cheap cd-rom drive in there if you need one the mobo has integrated graphics so you have to live with it.oh and a 3 dollar case fan too

:edit: i dont think video editing would work on a 170 dollar budget but thats the best i could come up with though
