OK. Here's a solution for you.

First-
MSCONFIG (when used with the RUN command) opens up the System Configuration Utility. Most of the stuff in there you don't want to mess with unless you know what you are doing or have detailed instructions.

Click the STARTUP tab. The list that it pulls up is everything that you can choose to start up when Windows does.

Why is all of this stuff in the list? Because every program designer thinks his 'creation' is so indispensible that no one could possibly want it to NOT start up with their computer (yeah, right), so they set it into the list and have it to do just that.

Once you're at the list, look it over and see what all has a check mark. Every program that does starts up when Windows loads... EVERYTIME!

If something is checked, but you don't know what it is, Google it and find out.

Once you have seen what is there, uncheck everything that you don't need or want. Keep your firewall, antivirus, broadband drivers, graphics drivers, whatever you absolutely have to have, but uncheck everythign else.

Once you are done, click APPLY, OK, then reboot.

When your computer starts up, you'll get a grey box about the System Configuration Utility. Check the box about 'Don't run on startup' then OK.

If you had a lot of stuff checked, then your comp ought to start up faster and run more stable.

Second-
Download and run AdAware, Spybot, and possibly Microsoft AntiSpyware.

(All are free. Be sure to have each one update itself before you scan.)

Third-
Uninstall any unused or unneeded programs you have on your hard drive.

Fourth-
Download and run TweakNow to clean up your computer's registry.

Fifth-
Run Disk Defragmenter START- ALL PROGRAMS- ACCESSORIES- SYSTEM TOOLS- DISK DEFRAGMENTER).

Reboot your computer and see if it cranks up a bit faster, plus it ought to have a lot more zip to it as well.
-------------------------------------------------

As for the network adapter thing, your computer's motherboard has an ethernet adapterand the computer came with a modem (according to the original configuration specs). Unless one of them has fried, or you are talking about wireless, you don't need one.

De nada.

I learned that through experience and a lot of swearing...

Yeah, this information was available in a recent PC World. Another few tips.. decrease the alloted size your recycle bin uses (10mb) down to something like 3 or 1mb... or just have things delete permanently right when they enter.

r-click and select properties on your recycle bin.

other small changes that will make performance better:

-turn off system restore (you can always turn it back on right before you do anything "scary" with your computer) via CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM

If you have 1GB or more of memory, you can get rid of the paging file that windows uses on your hard drive (unless you do anything that requires a lot of memory):
CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>Advanced Tab>"Settings" under Performance>Advanced Tab>Change (under virtual memory)>click the radio next to No Paging File>click Set and then OK... you'll have to reboot.

Or you can even resize a large paging file to a secondary hard drive where the operating system isn't isntalled, that way it has to sift through less files to access this file.

I would still reformat if you are going to sell, then reinstall windows and sell it clean.

Do you mean like a scratch disk?

And yes you should re-format if your going to sell it, even though trotter spent a lot of time showing you how to thoroughly clean your computer, a format would be a lot less time consuming and easier.

hmm, not sure what a scratch disk is...

I just meant, moving your paging file to another HD - if you have one that isn't cluttered up with a bunch of stuff like your primary OS drive is. That way, the page file can be accessed quicker.. theoretically.

i am running a celeron 330, and mine seems really fast, and im running 512 MB RAM and wireless.

you have to know how to take care of your PC
