Hi I want to upgrade my case fan for the 12v connection through molex, since the one in my case right now is controlled through the motherboard. My question is can I just replace that fan and leave that connection off on the motherboard? or does the motherboard need to know there is a fan there to work? or is there a way to make the one I have now go faster?

Thanks

You want it controlled by the motherboard the onboard fan controller should change the speeds appropriately with temps. You can change settings in the bios if needed. The fan can be plugged directly into the psu but most don't have fan controllers so it will be full power all the time. i.e. noisy. It doesn't HAVE to be on the mobo but its generally preferable. You can get adapters but if they're stock fans its probably best to buy new better ones.
