case fan 101...

i have a connection on my mobo for "fan 2". what's the difference between connecting a case fan to the mobo and just connecting it to the power supply. does the mobo control speed? if so, is that necessary or can i just connect my case fans to power and they'll run at a constant speed? how does this work?

Yes the mobo can control the speed, Can you tell us what mobo you have ?

also, what size case fan is likely to fit in the standard rear fan location of my tower? it looks like it measures 70mm but 60mm seems like a more common size.

where do you guys put these huge fans, like 120mm? do your cases have provisions for such big fans or do you have to "make" room?

In most instances we use cases that already provide for larger fans.

80mm is a standard chassis fan size.

matters what case you have really most that I've come across have either 2 80mm slots or a single 120mm slot in the back.The Lower end case have a single 80mm slot often.
