Default Buying a laptop

What should i look for when buying a used laptop? Im finding it rather hard to find one around town.

I need something for school w/ wireless internet and maybe something that can play some basic games.

What are some signs that a laptop has gone bad so to speek?

Make sure that the display and sound functions work properly, that it doesn't smell like smoke, and that the touchpad, buttons, and ALL keyboard buttons work properly.
I've found that used laptops around where I live and pretty overpriced for the most part, save for a few places. I've had better luck buying from highly reputable sellers on ebay. We're talking 99% + positive feedback.
