after calculating the cost of a VDU an OS [namely windows XP]

is it still cheaper to build rather then buy =/

i wanna build purely as it makes the computer system more personal but ive run into the wall of costs

i mean these two units alone can cost £200 wouldnt it work out cheaper to buy from a retailer?

i know everyone will say no, but id just like soem facts and figures if you dont mind =P

No, it is cheaper to buy a pre built PC than a custom built one by your self. It is only cheaper when you start to move into performance PC's. (with Windows XP, you can do cheaper - just - if you go for a Linux OS like Ubuntu.)

Their has been very few times in which I have not been able to build a comptuer cheaper then what I could buy.

i see then what is the use in building "general PCs"?

if trifid is correct what would be the purpose?

The experience of building one. There isn't much point but you do still get better parts. As soon as you add a graphics card it is cheaper to build compared to a equivalent pre built.
