I'm a musician, not a tech guy. But now I need tech advice on upgrading my comp so that it can handle real time audio samples. (my 5 yr old Dell isn't really cutting it) I'm using sibelius 5 and Konkakt2 for most of my work.

I'm not sure what's the best way to go...buying a pre assembled pc, or having one built? Here are some specs I'm looking for:

-intel core2duo E6600 (or something with a similar performance)
-windows xp pro (isn't there a way to tweak it so it can make use of more than 2 GB of RAM?) (or would windows vista be better for this?)
-3-4 GB of RAM
-some sort of entry-level pro soundcard (i don't know much about these)

I won't use this computer for gaming at all, so i don't need killer graphics. Any recommendations?

my current setup:

Dell Dimensions 2350
Intel Celeron 1.7GHz
1GB RAM
Windows XP pro, Service Pack 2

Hey musicmaker84,
Welcome to T.F.!!

Get the E6550 for the CPU. It's just as powerful, but cheaper.

It's only that you get the 64-bit editions of Windows, that you can use more than 2GB of RAM effectively.

You don't need more than 2GB of RAM. Music editing software, is not a memory hog. 2GB will be more than enough.

For graphics, an onboard will do, or just some cheap card, like an 8500GT.

What's your budget? It would be better to build it, than buy it pre-built.
