Well, obviously, if I were reccomending I'd tell him to spend $350 and build a dual core with a gig of ram, but if he wants to build a cheaper machine, that's entirely up to him.

Edit: Haha, I keep having things to add.

I also wouldn't reccomend people try and build a windows machine for under $200-$250...but a linux machine can be built cheaper.

Craigslist.org if your in an area they've got a setup for is great for old pcs.

You can get a pc for $100, just don't expect a lot of power. Put Puppy Linux on it or DSL, though, and you've got a **** usable pc.
I don't expect much for under $100, thanks for the site.
Limited budget at this time, in the future I will look into a updated system.

Comes to right at $90 before shipping. I'd estimate $110 after or shipping, maybe? P4 1.4ghz. Not a powerful pc by any means, but for just browsing the web? Put Xubuntu on it and you'll be fine.
Browsing the internet, storing about 3GB of music, very basic use.

Tisoraku, what is it you are trying to improve on your computer? What do you use it for? Gaming? listening to music? surfing the web? more hard drive space?
Was thinking about a cheap system as a second computer, right now we are running, Compaq 5000 with 512Ram (was 128) a 4MB graphics card, 863MHZ 30GB HD running Windows Xp Professional with Comcast cable internet, not much can be done with that system from what I heard here.

Quote:
he's right, unless u play really old games, don't expect very good performance on a $100 dollar system, i recommend u save up some extra cash and get a new build, unless u play only some ancient game
I do not play games very often.

Of course you won't build a powerful or gaming machine for $100. But if all you do is browse/email/word process...you can build that kind of machine for around $100, still lower-end, though.
What would you conceder lower end?
I ask because the computer we are using now (above) is on the very low end side my current standards.

Quote:
I would, however, RECCOMEND, kicking it up to about $200 and spending $90 on a sempron/celeron cpu/mb, $50 on a big HD, $25 for the case/psu combo I posted and $30 for a 512mb kit of ram.
I should think about raising the budget for this simple system, an extra $100 could get me a bit more, Thinking about it I would also like to have a DVD drive with Windows XP already installed.

You're probably asking the wrong crowd how to build a cheap pc...do you see what they have in their signatures

On the Ubuntu forum I regularily come across people who happily run systems where ram is measured in kbs rather gbs of mbs.

It makes sense. What they want to do with the pc is simple and doesn't require much, so why spend so much money if they can do it for cheaper?

You can get a system around the same as what you've got now for about $50 on craigslist, at least that's what they go for in my area. Plus on craigslist, its all local, so no need to ship the big, heavy pc.

If you want to spend a bit more here's my suggestion...comes to a little over $200

I believe my computer would be used as a door stop.

The system before this was a 166MHZ, that was seven years ago.

I would like a system with at least 512Ram, Windows XP as the original system, DVD/Cd drive, at least 900MHZ, I would have to use a wireless router to connect to the cable internet, which I have never done and not sure what effect it would have on anything if at all as well as connection speed on the new system.

Would not hurt to have something better then a 4mb graphics card.

I have been there for a little while now and there are a few possible systems, looking for the best deal.

A bit more for something better.

I'm looking on ebay and on craigslist, my budget will have to increase because I need a flat panel monitor.

What do you (anyone) think would be a fair price for the below computer?

Gateway ATXAEG LX2 700S Desktop PC with 17" Flat CRT Monitor
CPU : 2.0GHz
Memory : 512MB
HDD : 20GB or 30GB (Sorry I don't remember)
Keyboard and mouse.
CDRW Driver.
54MB Wireless Network card.
Sound Blaster Audigy Sound Card, Modem.

64MB Video Card with Digital DIV output.

Windows XP Home.

What is the type of CPU? Pentium 4 ghz vs C2D 2ghz is a big *** diference

If its P4, I'd price it around $100 from what I see on craigslist, and I check it a bit.

Most likely a Pentium 4.
Now I am looking into connecting the computer to a television if possible.
Thinking of bringing my budget closer to $150-$200.

you wont get what you have for 100.00...
the build that mgcook listed above is good. except you need windows xp, and that will run you about 100 bucks more. so for a windows p.c. you are looking at around 400.00 MINIMUM. for a new one, that is. i dont suggest buying a used computer, especially one that is old as dust.
