I use avast! and AVG. They're both free, and they both work fine. I usualy do a scan every 2 weeks or so, but I'd recommend ATLEAST once a month. Also, make sure you get SpyBot: Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE. They're Spyware removers. Get both Anti-viruses and both Spyware removers, since one will detect some things the other doesn't. Also, I use CrapCleaner to remove my temporary files and crap (hence the name
). It'll delete cookies, temporary internet files, history, and all the other crap that could contain viruses. It's basically the same thing as Windows' Disk Cleanup, but CrapCleaner is about 100,000 times faster. Takes about 7 seconds to run it, while it takes about 10 minutes to run Disk Cleanup. The combiniation of all these programs will keep your system clean. Another good thing to have is a firewall. I personally have 2 (1 hardware and 1 software), just to be on the safe side. The only thing I don't like about this is having to find the right ports to forward for games and what-nots. I've heard ZoneAlarm is a good free software firewall. Whenever you download anything, try and get it in ZIP format if they have it (I've just heard it's abit safer, not sure why though), then immediately scan it with your virus scanner. One thing I like about avast and AVG is they automatically scan it (even ZIPs), and you can tell them to scan it again, just to be safe. Also, AVG lets me know if a site is trying to force a virus or something onto my computer, and then asks me if I want to close the connection to the site. So, use these programs in concordance wiht each other, and you will be safe form viruses, trojans, etc. Enjoy your new PC
