after i get my new pc together im gonna need anti virus software. does everyone here use it and whats the best one to get? i want something that will keep my computer really safe because ive made a big investment in my pc. ive had computers in the past that have been totally destroyed by viruses. i cant have that happen now

Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10

No matter what AV you have, if you dont know how to use the internet properly, you will always have some kind on infection..

can you give me some tips? since i have a cable modem, is it possible to get a virus without being on an internet explorer? like can i get infected by just having my computer on or playing an online game? i really want to avoid viruses as much as possible

Yes you can. Just like Sasser, You connect to the net, and your hit if you werent patched or had a firewall on.

Windows Updated
Spyware Definitions Updated
AV Definitions Updated
Dont download something you might think is bad
When you do download something, choose save to disk then scan it for viruses
Stay away from Warez sites, porn sites, Crack, etc.
Never ever click yes or no on a pop up, either click the x on the top right hand corver or kill it in the task manager
keep a popup blocker on high, ctrl to override it
turn of windows messenger service, not msn messenger
be careful on messenger clients as viruses pose as friends sends links out that you think your friend just send you and actually its a mass mailing email virus to corrupt the address book, etc
always delete cookies and TEMP. Internet Files
Use SP2 if you have XP
Have a Hardware firewall combinded with a software firewall and XPs firewall

Just be smart

don't get dat...those are only used on corporate network servers...u want an anti virus for clients or desktop computers.

there are no such things as which is the best anti-virus. they all do the same things. protect and remove viruses. mcafee and symantec are widely known and mostly used on desktop computers. i'm using symantec but i would recommend trend micro. and since ur on a broadband connection, get the internet suite version.

there isnt nothing wrong with using symantec just because they use them on server, you can set them to manage or unmanaged, update them selves and it use little resource, you dont even know its there

I use avast! and AVG. They're both free, and they both work fine. I usualy do a scan every 2 weeks or so, but I'd recommend ATLEAST once a month. Also, make sure you get SpyBot: Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE. They're Spyware removers. Get both Anti-viruses and both Spyware removers, since one will detect some things the other doesn't. Also, I use CrapCleaner to remove my temporary files and crap (hence the name :p ). It'll delete cookies, temporary internet files, history, and all the other crap that could contain viruses. It's basically the same thing as Windows' Disk Cleanup, but CrapCleaner is about 100,000 times faster. Takes about 7 seconds to run it, while it takes about 10 minutes to run Disk Cleanup. The combiniation of all these programs will keep your system clean. Another good thing to have is a firewall. I personally have 2 (1 hardware and 1 software), just to be on the safe side. The only thing I don't like about this is having to find the right ports to forward for games and what-nots. I've heard ZoneAlarm is a good free software firewall. Whenever you download anything, try and get it in ZIP format if they have it (I've just heard it's abit safer, not sure why though), then immediately scan it with your virus scanner. One thing I like about avast and AVG is they automatically scan it (even ZIPs), and you can tell them to scan it again, just to be safe. Also, AVG lets me know if a site is trying to force a virus or something onto my computer, and then asks me if I want to close the connection to the site. So, use these programs in concordance wiht each other, and you will be safe form viruses, trojans, etc. Enjoy your new PC:D !

ya i know but the corporate and enterprise versions are for busness usage and they aren't meant to run on a home pc. and besides they are highly priced. he's lookin for an anti-virus for his personal computer so the standard versions will fit his needs.
