Default AMD Hypertransport

I am putting together a new system and this hypertransport on the amd 64 processors has me confused...apparently they have an 800 Mhz there even RAM available that can utilize that speed? Where is the benefit?

Amd has a 1600ghz HTT on the 754 platform and 2000mhz on the 939 (including DDR's double data rate.) It is like a FSB but is extremly fast and efficient. It is the link between the memory controller and ram (as you know)

Anyway, to make point of this post, increase in HTT speed over 754, 939 and soon to be 940 is not very different in real terms speed. But you should get the socket 939 cpu over a 754 as it will be 2 genereations old this summer.

AMD K8 CPU's talk directly to RAM, they have their own memory controller
other CPU's talk to a memory controller on the motherboard, which then talks to RAM

so the AMD K8 CPU's generally talk to RAM faster

Hypertransport is the name of the AMD K8 CPU's link to RAM
FSB is the name of the link between a (different) CPU and the memory controller on the motherboard.
since there is no motherboard memory controller on AMD K8 systems, they don't have a FSB. people just refer to the Hypertransport instead.
