Adding more Ram

I basically have been told it matters what operating system i have got if i want to upgrade Ram, I want to know if it is true?
I am running Windows XP 32 bit and i have 4GB DDR3 1333 Corsair Ram, I would like to put in another 4G.
The purpose of me upgrading more Ram is that I do a lot of 3D CAD and I would like to be able to Render better quality Images in quicker time.

So basically can I run 8GB RAM on XP 32 Bit?

I just built my pc, I've got:
RAM: Corsair XMS 4Gb DDR3 1333 (2x2Gb)
Intel i3 540 3.06 GHz
Asus 1024Mb ATi Radeon 5450
Asus P7H55D-M Pro LGA1156

Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)

this page lists max physical ram supported by xp 32 bit is 4gb. you'd have to change your OS to use more physical ram
