Default 8800GTS 512mb equivalent?

Hey folks. My friend has an issue with her computer, she was playing a game and the screen went really messed up, full of what sounds like artifacts. Now when she boots the computer everything is messed up visually, things will load but it's so messed up it's beyond use.

She's not confident to try things herself and she got this computer built for her in 2008 by a local gaming PC specialist company, who offer long term after care (she's been to them a few times).

In the result this is her GPU dying on her, what sort of "modern day" card would give her performance on par with the 8800GTS 512mb? She doesn't have much in the way of spare money so this isn't an opportunity to get a high end card, just something which will be up to scratch.

She'd prefer to stay with nvidia given the choice.

cheers for any suggestions folks.

if she is buying new, the gts 450 would be the cheapest replacement.
anything lower (ie gt 440, gt 430) would be a downgrade.
the gtx 550 ti is about 20% faster for about 10% more in price.

We need to know her budget for a video card, and her system specs.
In particular, we need to know her case and power supply. For a new video card, you may want a new power supply as well for reliability.
If you can't find out what case she has, try to measure for how much room a video card would have.
If her power supply is a reputable brand such as: Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, etc., then you likely don't need to upgrade it.

Sorry should have given more info..

there's not really a fixed budget I know of. It's basically..cheapest possible way to get performance on par with the 8800GTS if it does turn out the GPU is on deaths door.

She had a bit of an upgrade recently that I'm not 100% on. Not sure on mobo, but she's got 4Gb DDR3 ram at 1333mhz (so cheap stuff) and a core I3 processor..not sure quite which one.

I advised her on parts out of the offerings this place had at the time so she's got quality components. PSU won't be an issue, Corsair HX520W. Case some Gigabyte thing which cost around 80 at the time, it's a large full tower so room won't be a big concern.

I would go with a 6770, It's about equal to a 550 ti and it's cheaper.

Actually, a gt 440 is the replacemnt to a 8800gts.

The 450 is a replacement to the 9800gtx+

I'd go with the above amd card.
