Default $750 build

Okay, my cousin wants a computer, and he knows nothing about building PC's.

He wants a computer, pre-build, preferably HP, Emachine, or Acer.
Something cheap.

I am happy to help him find a computer like that for $750-$800, but, he wants to play video games on his PC. This seems difficult, as store-build computers don't have a video card.

And he doesn't want a custom-built one, because his parents don't like custom computers. Don't ask me why.

Is there any way to mod-up a pre-built computer to have a video card? And what computer would you recommend from www.futureshop.ca?

in the spec sheet for dekstops on the futureshop website, it tells you in the "available slot" section if there is an empty pci-express slot... if it is.. then you can just buy a seperate video card and isntall it...

edit: does he need a monitor?

He needs a complete system, with mouse and keyboard, and speakers.

He has an NEC 17" CRT, which is okay for gaming, but in his price range, he can't afford an LCD. So Monitor is fine.

Are HP's, Emachines, or Acer's upgradable? I know that Dell has special parts for their machines, is that the same as other companies?

anyways.. i would get him one of these three..

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

well actually out of those 2 i have no idea what the difference is..
they have different model numbers tho... T6534 and H6534

if you wanted $750 just for the pc.. then you add video card and monitor or w/e later.. then get this one..

when you say monitor is fine, you mean that he doesn't need one, right?

oh and if you were asking if they use special parts that are not compatible.. i have no idea.. all i know is that the ones i showed you have a pci-express slot thats free and you can buy your own video card and add it... if you wanted to upgrade powersupply or anything else.. i have no idea..

Why don't you build it for him?

The guy already said his friends parents don't like custom built machines.

Yea, they're really funny. I offered to build a whole system, they said NO. They are still a little uncomfortable with the video card idea, but i told them that a video card is required for gaming.

I'm starting to think that those Emachines would be good along with an OK card and 512MB RAM.
