Default $500

My girlfriends aunt wants me to build her a computer for $500ish Canadian. It has to include everything mouse, keyboard speakers and 17" CRT monitor (all black). This pc will just be used for internet and msn. Now I've got an old P4 motherboard with a 1.8GHz CPU on it. I'm wondering if I should just put that in the system or get a barebone and build up from there. With a barebone I can't seem to cut $500 though after tax & shipping.

Then you can buy a black CRT and call it a day...

I think you should use the P4 cpu and the m/b you already have.
Buy a gig or 512 ram,a 60-80gb hard disk. Also you could buy a used CRT monitor,it would be much cheaper I guess...You budget is ok for building a web-surfing pc.

i didn't wanna shop around the parts (too lazy) so see if you can find better prices in stores close to you (or at least price-match).

total: $360.84

add a monitor, shipping, and taxes. its gonna be tight! but if you pull it off it'll be a pretty good comp.

Well, the motherboard you posted has intergraded video so there's no need for the 9250. I can get a DVD burner for like $55 plus tax and possibly a cheaper case here in montreal so the shipping won't be as much. I think it looks pretty good. The only reason I really want to give her my P4 is just to get a bit of cash lol. After all it's only internet surfing.

oh ya oops i didn't realize it had video..

reason i chose the antec case cuz it comes with that 350watt powersupply. you can save like $50 if you get a cheap case with a cheap powersupply.. but thats a gamble as to how it'll perform.. system is relatively low end so a cheap powersupply might be enough.. but who knows..

are you gonna get a new or used monitor? or have you chosen one already?

I think I'm going to get a used monitor, I found one at a computer store not too far from my house. It's 17" black and $40.

if you can do that then that'll free up a lot of budget..

in that case you can even get them a pretty case that they'll appreciate more than any ram or vid card.... lol
