What VIRUS is this? I'd like to ... ugh!

What the Heck is This? Logfile Att'd ...
I have Windows XP and recently upgraded IE6 to IE8. Well, of course, this brought in a slew of problems that I would gladly give up "tabbed" browsers to be rid of...
but too late for that.
Anyway, here are the symptoms; I can't even log into my comptuer now without risking it, so I'm writing from another. I THOUGHT it was a Trojan, but the symptoms are more far-reaching:
1. Redirects Google searches
2. Inhibits ActiveX notifications from Windows when downloading from download.com (I had to uninstall and reinstall Malware Bytes several times so that the **** infector didn't disable notifications)
3. Won't run in Safe Mode even though I tell it to from the boot menu
4. Today, I had an error stating that it Active Sync (for my phone) couldn't connect to the COM port and that Windows couldn't connect to the serial port
5. Yesterday, it read an error like "Gen WinHost32 cannot connect," but I
closed the window so fast I couldn't read it. Sorry.
6. IE8 opens multiple times (up to 20-25) when I just want one.
7. Several instances of svchost.exe run on different users (system, network service, local); when I check the hosts table, there aren't more than 1.
Can anyone shed light on this? I can't find any Browser Help Objects in the registry that shouldn't be there. Some of my HKLM/Mic/Win/CurrentVer/InternetSettings/Zones were out of whack, but only 1201 and 1604 in all 5 zones (0-4).

then disable all start up entries in msconfig, then download avg free, update and scan.

Microsoft Security Essentials seems like its been having a better detection rate lately, so I would suggest to use that.
 
Sounds messed up a bit...

I need you to run these programs in this order...

Combofix, malwarebytes and then hijackthis

Post all of their logs and we will go from there
