if i turn off system restore, it turns off on C: and H:. H: is the recovery partition. i have a Gateway desktop.

edit: i scanned over it, and look at these 016's. they all look like crapware to me.

Default Re: Trojan in SYSTEM RESTORE please help

so what should i do about system restore?

done scanning with spybot i dont think it found much. ad aware pro is scanning now i think i'll leave it over night.

one problem, my desktop just went totally blank. i think i know part of the reason. i had a background that was in my pictures\wallpaper but i deleted the wallpaper folder because i backed it up to my external drive. i changed the power settings and then it changed my desktop to white, so i figured i would change it to something easier on the eyes, white was killing me. switched to black but i think i might've switched back, and it kinda froze up on me and now it's white and there's nothing. i still have the start menu all that stuff on the bottom, as well as rocketdock. ad aware seems to be going just fine, opera and firefox work good too. i saved the instructions from Warez Monster's guide to a wordpad file and im leaving that open so i know the setting to put.

LAST EDIT: ran CWShredder i didnt know i had that crap... well i only had one component so when i tried to fix it this popped up from spybot.which one do i click? maybe its cuz im on a widescreen monitor? this is the same thing CWShredder was trying to fix

edit: forgot to mention my desktop items are still in c:\docs & settings\matt\desktop

edit: this is basically a reminder for myself, when all this is done im going to do the following:
- slim down windows with an nLite'd installation, i have already started but need to work on it some more (i started about a week ago)
- keep said installation handy in my desk should a problem ever arise
- create one of those recovery disc things. i think i have one from Gateway laying around, but it's probably no good as i never did anything with system restore and if it worked, the trojan would probably still be there.
- i might get a second hard drive just a 40 GB one to put windows and programs on, then leave my 320 for just data.

Default Re: Trojan in SYSTEM RESTORE please help

dont mean to double post but those edits are getting confusing

im not done with everything yet so i will update hijackthis log later.
these programs are finished and i dont know if you need the logs for them:
Ad Aware
SpyBot*
CCleaner
Cleanup!
CWShredder*

*these two had a conflicting error see above screenshot

i am currently running RootkitRevealer, and then will run Ewido. i ran Smith fraud fix, but i used option 1 and now im not sure what to do next. MSconfig Cleanup is done, i left the 2 logitech desktop messengers in there because i guessed removing them might cause some conflict or something. everything else is gone.

when im done with everything is it safe to remove the items in hijackthis that i quoted earlier?

is my machine going to be ok? i feel like crying this is so scary =/ im worried
what annoys me is i was just learning about system restore and i was like "hey i should do that incase something bad happens" about a month too late i guess

edit: one last thing it seems weird to me that the trojan made it to system restore, but everything that scans the original download seems to come up clean there.
