Hi.... My laptop is really full of popups at the moment. I tried everything i know i should try: scanned with Norton, McAfee, BitDefender and avast!; scanned with Ad-aware, Hitman Pro (S&D). They found a lot of virusses (Trojans) at first, but now they're all coming up empty. Still i get a whole lot of popups.

I'd really appreciate if you could take a look at my HJT-log!

Update:

downloaded the VX2-plugin for Ad-aware, and ran it. It returned (logfile):

Posssible new VX2 variant file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fpnm0351e.dll

The problem is, i can't clean anything (button is disabled). Any clues?

The popups should be expected. Your using an UNPATCHED XP system on the net. :eek: Please see the bottom of this post!

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)


Download and install Cleanup but DO NOT run it yet!

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then it will ask for a password so please enter bye (lowercase) then hit enter. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and save it as I will ask for it later.

*Note*
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder and post it.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible.
Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure itÂ’s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
    [X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

  • Click [Scanner]
  • Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
  • Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
  • With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].
  • Once finished, click the [Save report] button
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
    [X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Once back to normal windows.....

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
    [*] Click on see report. Then click Save report

Please post that log in your next reply along with the Ewido log, L2Mfix log, and a new hijackthis log.


IMPORTANT!:


Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2) (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately itÂ’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

thanks for your quick response.

Due to some other errors with programs i had to use often (problems existed before spyware-attack) i decided to reinstall Windows: make a fresh start!
I immediatly patched it to SP2, so i hope these spyware problems belong to the past (again) now...

BTW: the unpatched version worked for about a year for me, without any problems (regarding Spyware, virus attacks etc.).

Not in todays world can you not have XP updated. Anyway to help prevent this in the future please follow the advice below.

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Please visit Microsoft's Window's Update Page and install the latest service packs, patchÂ’s and security updates for your system.


Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
