I've been trying to rid myself of the Lycos Sidesearch adware (aka searchreslt.com) for a couple of days now. I think the instructions posted here for users to follow before posting the logs may have done the trick. Just in case, I'm posting the log anyway.

If you did not put these entries into your trusted zone remove these as well.

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked"

Enable show all files folders:
Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by tapping the F8 key while your system starts up.

Search and remove the following files/folders:
C:\windows\system32\Vlf.exe
C:\windows\system32\NjeE.exe

Cleaning out temp files:
Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

While still in Safe Mode run your updated:
Anti-Virus Software
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware SE
Remove any items they find.

Empty your Recycle Bin

Reboot your computer normally and post back a new HJT log by using "Post a Reply

Do you know who your current ISP is?? Please post that information in your next post.

Below is the new log, per your instructions.

My ISP is SBC Yahoo dsl.

No viruses were found, only one bit of adware by Spybot, and for the first time, Adaware found nothing. I hope we're getting closer!

Looking much better now.

I would suggest that you remove ViewPoint Manager:

You can do this by going to Add-Remove Programs in the control panel.

ViewPoint Manager

Run HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items:

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {CC378B83-9577-44D0-B4F8-0DD965E176FC} - C:\Program Files\eSyndicate\esyn.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked"

Search for and remove if found:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Reboot your computer and post back a new HJT log by using Post a Reply

There's also a "viewpoint media player" there. I don't even know what either of these programs are. Should I remove that via add/remove programs, too?

That was going to be what I'd hoped to be my final question to you--how did this happen, and how do I prevent it in the future? Thanks for anticipating that. You ROCK (pun intended).

I appreciate this so much!! I write for a living and this computer is my work partner, my baby, my soulmate, my bread and butter. I thought I was doing all the right things in running antivirus software, updating Windows regularly, and running (updated) spybot and adaware regularly, too. Apparently all that still ain't enough. I'm willing to learn, though.

Incidentally, I searched for help on this for quite a while. This was the first forum where I received both prompt and helpful responses. Much appreciated!
