Dear MicroBell,
I ran into a problem right off the bat. I tried to export a copy to a blank CD, and the PC froze up. I did a hard reboot, and then saved a copy renamed, into my documents folder. I then, looked for the entry you have highlighted in RED, but to no avail.

Here is what I found in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run

(DEFAULT) REG_SZ (VALUE NOT SET)

ADAPTECDIRECTCD REG_SZ *C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADAPTEC\EASY CD CREATOR 5..

ATICCC REG_SZ *C:\PROGRAM FILES\ATI TECHNOLOGIES\ATI....

I did not venture any more, without first notifying you.
Please let me know where to go next. I have copied your previous instructions and will be glad to continue on, depending on your approval.

Sorry for the terrible type space in the above entries. Please forgive.

Thanks!

Addendum!
Looking at the above posts, I notice that there are 3 entries, that are different in each scan, and none of the 3 are present at the same time. Are these the problem, and do they keep morphing into new names? I have highlighted them in red below....

Just a thought from a noob. Allow me your expertise if you would.

Correct. Every time you reboot the file changes names. You have to catch it in it's current name...delete it's registry Key and use KILLBOX (you can't simply delete it) and delete it. If you miss one of those steps...the file reinstalls with a new name on the next reboot.

So without rebooting....run my fix again but apply the new name that the file is now...and delete the files with killbox. Once complete..post the requested logs.

the new file name was dmxvu.exe, and I deleted with the regedit, but it appears to have shown back up in the following HiJackThis log.

Scoot

Nope...missed it as it changed names and is still listed in the log...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmxvu.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxvu.exe

Let's try one more time......

First....Open HJT and do a scan. ID what entry and filename is there BEFORE going any further. Then fix the entry with HJT. Close HJT.

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletionÂ…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click YES...and it will reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxvu.exe

*Note* I used the filename from your last log. If it's different...make sure you input the new filename was if you use the old one...and it's changed the fix will fail.

Once you reboot....run KILLBOX again with the same instuctions. The key is to KILLBOX the file in it's current state.

Then run another HJT scan and check for that entry. If it's back..proceed below....

Download Rkfiles.zip http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder on your desktop.

Download the following attachment remv3.zip http://forums.skads.org/index.php?showtopic=80

Make a folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip the files into it.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODEÂ… These tools MUST be run in safe mode!!
Once in safe modeÂ…

Double click rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the dos window closes.
Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now Open the folder were you saved remv3.zip files and click the rem.bat file and let it run. It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and/or bad1.txt

**Note** Each tool uses log.txt as itÂ’s output file so make sure you save the entryÂ’s from one tool before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you donÂ’t.

Reboot back to normal mode and post the contents of both the log.txt and log1.txt in your next post.

Sorry for the delay. Directly after my last post, I went back into regedit, and deleted the file from registry again, along with my backup copy in my documents folder I had made. And it apparently, is gone for good now. I can't find it in registry, nor with HJ or Kill. And I have rebooted since to find it still gone.

Here is the latest HJT log, just incase.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. As for that entry "sidesearch" it's likely an old registry entry. Use a few registry cleaners and see if they pick it up...but it's not really important as it's files are gone. If your overly concerned go through Symantec's site for this adware and check the registry keys that are listed.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.sidesearch.html

We still have a few more items to address so please follow the instructions below.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows 2000
===============

  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Select the Advanced settings box option.
  • Select the Hidden files Folders.
  • Deselect the Show all files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows ME
===============

  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.

Create a new System Restore point

Windows XP
===============

  • Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
  • This deletes ALL restore points that had the infection and creates a clean one

Windows ME
===============

  • Click the Start tab.
  • Select the Settings option.
  • Select the Control Panel option.
  • Double Click the System icon Performance tab option.
  • Select File System
  • Select the Troubleshooting tab
  • Check the Disable System Restore box
  • Click Apply to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Reboot the PC and repeat the above procedure again
When you get to this option
  • Uncheck the Disable System Restore box

For Windows ME..we MUST create a new restore point now as Windows ME will not create one automatically until the computer has been on for 10 hours or 24 hours has passed. To create a new restore point follow the procedure below.

  • Click the Start button.
  • Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  • Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the Restore point description box, type a name for your restore point, and then click Next.
    Click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Please visit Microsoft's Window's Update Page and install the latest service packs, patchÂ’s and security updates for your system.

Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

Many, many thanks for all the wonderful help you have provided.

This has been a taxing, but informative event. Thanks for the patience and guidance.

Shortly, I will once again be forced back to the dial up world. So my browser using will be cut down quite a bit. I have had a few months of cable modem life, but will be moving soon.

Grateful,
