My system has been compromised

I need your help. I think my system security has been compromised.Today my Norton detected a Trojan Horse called hacktool.rootkit. So I goggled it and here is what I got http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/hacktool.rootkit.html. Here is the solution that I found on the same page. ''The presence of Hacktool.Rootkit implies that the security of the system has been compromised. The system should be restored from known clean backup copies or patched to restore security." This not quite clear and also a bit scary. I am not sure where to start. I really appreciate if you look at my logfile and help me out.

Try doing an online scan with another antivirus. I have never found Norton Antivirus to be a truthful antivirus.

I taught also my log seems to be clean but I couldn't understand why Norton poped up with the warning. I did scan with panda before I posted this and I also did scan with bitdefender after your reply. They didn't find anything about hacktool.rootkit. The warning had stopped but I still don't know whether really my system has been compromised or not. I kept checking every single connection and I haven't seen anything strange. Netstat -n shows me the usual. I disabled my bittorrent client and remote desktop access. I still have a doubt that something is wrong. Anything that you guys suggest I should do? By the way I don't have a firewall. I only use the basic windows firewall. I am thinking to try ZoneAlarm what do you suggest? Is there a better free firewall than ZoneAlarm?

I dont understand the warning either.

I used to have Norton 2002 installed way back, and i would get weird messages too. Its probably the antivirus conflicting with your operating system.


As for the firewall,

Zone Alarm Free is an excellent choice, but they limit features because they want you to buy it

I havent used it, but i have heard excellent things about Sygate Personal Firewall. Its completely free.
