Ok rstones12, let's go through this step by step. I'll try to be as accurate as possible.

1. Checked "Add/remove programs". There was no "Spyware begone". There was a program labelled "New.net Domain 6.38" & I removed it OK.

2. Downloaded & ran "FxAgentB.exe". It generated its own notepad - I assume is the log you want as I am unable to find any other log. The results were:

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

Backdoor.Agent.B has not been found on your computer.

3. Rebooted computer.

4. Checked & confirmed "CW shredder" is version 2.13. Ran "CW shredder", "fix". It found & fixed 1 hidden file.

5. Rebooted computer.

6. Logged on to internet & confirmed there were no more updates for either "Ad-Aware SE" or "Spybot S&D". OK.

7. Ran "Ad-Aware SE". Again it locked up when performing "conditional scans" around object no. 124,xxx. Closed program.

8. Ran "Spybot S&D". It found 27 entries. Enabled it to fix all. It fixed all of them bar 2 entries.

9. Rebooted computer.

10. Ran "Spybot S&D" on start up. It found only 1 entry. Enabled it to fix it. Program then locked up. Was able to move cursor around screen but was unable to do anything else. Eventually, I hit "Ctrl/Alt/Del" & stopped the program that way.

11. Rebooted computer.

12. Ran "Spybot S&D" on start up. It found only no entries.

13. Ran "Ad-Aware SE". Again it locked up when performing "conditional scans" around object no. 124,xxx. Closed program.

14. Rebooted computer.

15. Ran HJT log. Results were:

16. Opened a cold beer & cursed the mongrels that have caused this.

Thankyou.

Best regards,
Troy.

Firstly, when my ex-partner was living with me, her kids downloaded Kazaa. To enable it to work they enabled (with my permission) various rules popped up by Norton Internet Security 2004. I now realise this was a mistake & is probably where my problems have originated. However, I didn't realise at the time the problems it would cause.

I have recently upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2005. Once we fix these problems I'm having, do I need to re-examine the rules I've created? Or do we need to do it now? It seems to me that if I've created a rule to allow access by a particular program then no matter what we do I will get the problem back.

Secondly, I am trying to use the internet as little as possible until we fix this for fear of catching another virus. However, since the last post I checked Internet Explorer. I did not go to any sites but when the home page came up, "My Search" did not appear rather I just got a blank white screen with my internet toolbar at the top. I logged off, rebooted the computer & logged back on to double check. "My search" did not reappear so it appears we are getting somewhere. I then came here to post this.

Finally, I came by this website quite by accident. I did a google search looking for "My search hijack" (or something akin to this). Until I read the moderators posts on this particular forum, I didn't realise where I was nor what you do here. I did not want to tie up the board with my particular problem which is why I contacted you, rstones12, via PM. Now I know what this forum is for.

I've said it before & I'll say it again. THANKYOU.
I saw on this website how to manually remove "my search bar" by going into the registry & removing files there, but before I venture where angels fear to tread, is this what I need to do?
Am I glad I asked.

Best regards,
Troy.

Here are the next set of directions:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

[*]Prepare AboutBuster for use:
  • Download AboutBuster.
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
  • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  1. Run CWShredder:
  2. Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  3. Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  4. CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  5. Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
[*]Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
  • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
  • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
  • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
[*]Clean out temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
[*]Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
[*]Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
  • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
  • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
  • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
  • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
  • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
  • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
  • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
  • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
  • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
  • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
  • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
[*]Prepare your reply:
  • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
  • Please post the AboutBuster log.
  • Please note any complications you had.

Thanks,
rstones12

Troy,
Nice Job, hang in there were moving along.

Double check in your Add-Remove Programs that you dont have this listed:
SpywareBegone
If that is listed remove it.

Ok now lets do this.

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items, dont fix anything just yet.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about :blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about :blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about :blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about :blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about :blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about :blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about :blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about :blank

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Begone] C:\freescan\freescan.exe -FastScan

O16 - DPF: {1E89F686-B78D-4C85-9EFC-3474516E3FE2} - http://directplugin.com/plugin/109998.exe

O16 - DPF: {3B02AAA2-327C-40ED-A849-4BE819AE5385} (ImgSizer Control) - file://C:\Documents and Settings\Troy\Local Settings\Temp\~DlfnTmp0\imgSizer.ocx

Now close all browsers and open windows except HJT and then click Fix Checked

Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode

Now do a search on your system and remove the following folders/files if found:

C:\freescan\freescan.exe <-- File

Scan with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE

Delete your temp files:

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty Your Recycle Bin.

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log by using Post a Reply

Thanks,

Ok, ran into a couple of problems.

1. Double checked Add-Remove Programs. There was no Spyware begone.

2. Ran HJT scan & check marked the 11 files you indicated.

3. Closed all browsers and open windows except HJT and then clicked Fix Checked.

4. Unchecked the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Clicked OK.

5. Rebooted into Safe Mode.

6. Clicked Start | Search | All files & folders containing the word "freescan". It did not come back with the file you indicated rather it came back with 2 folders. When I expanded these 2 folders, they contained Spyware begone. Did not delete as I had no instructions to do so (even though I presume you are going to ask me to do just that).

7. Scanned with Spybot. 0 files found.

8. Scanned with Ad-Aware SE. Again it locked up while performing conditional scans. This time it was around object No. 108,xxx.

9. Navigated to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Opened the Temp folder and Edit > Select All then File > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder. OK.

10. Start > Run and typed %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder opened. Clicked Edit > Select All then File > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
It would not let me delete the entire folder. The following pop-up appeared:
"Cannot access ~DF52AF Access denied"
When I tried to delete the remaining 1056 files, that pop-up box would appear.

11. Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Clicked "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and clicked OK. Clicked on the Programs tab then clicked the "Reset Web Settings" button. Clicked OK. OK.

12. Emptied Recycle Bin OK.

13. Rebooted normally OK.

14. Ran fresh HJT scan:

Hey Troy,
Well it looks like you had a couple of issues, no worries. :D

We have a few items to attend to.
Like a said this will take a few steps.

First download CleanUp
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
Install it but dont use it yet, we will later.

Go to Start | Control Panel | Add-Remove Programs
Remove the following entries if found:

Delfin Media Viewer

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dvx] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe

O16 - DPF: {10003000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - ms-its:mhtml:file://c:\nosuch.mht!http://2awm.com/pop/chm/tt1sp.chm::/on-line.exe

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT and click Fix Checked

Reboot into Safe Mode

Do a Search and remove the following:

C:\freescan <-- Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\ <-- Folder

Now run CleanUp

Empty your recycle bin

Reboot and post back a new HJT log by using Post a Reply

You may have to uninstall Ad-Aware SE then re-install it to fix that problem. Make sure to update right away.

Thanks,
rstones12

Hi rstones 12,

Last night I was in the middle of copying these latest instructions when 2 things happened.

Firstly, Norton antivirus detected the "bloodhound" virus & alerted me. I acknowledged it.

Secondly, I lost contact with your site server. It is ok now so I am assuming that it was a temporary fault.

Consequently I haven't been able to complete the last set of instructions but now I am about to leave for the weekend. Will be back on Sunday (AET). Will do the latest instructions then.

Do I need to do a back up (as recommended) BEFORE I run clean up? If so, is there a simple way to do so with Windows XP Home edition?

Best regrads,
Troy.

Troy,

No problem, dont run the CleanUp program yet, I will send you some instructions on that first.

Thanks,
rstones12

Hi rstones12,

I'm back. I have not done any of the previous instructions (apart from downloading cleanup) until you tell me exactly how far you want me to go.

Best regards,
Troy.
