Got a system that has a spyware problem. Popups everywhere.

I've run Adaware, Spybot and about 3 or 4 other spyware programs I downloaded at download.com that got a good user rating.

It's running *OK* right now, but wanted someone to check the hijackthis log to see if anything else needs to be done.

canooten, I'm Liz and I'll be reading your log...it may take me a bit of time but be patient and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I am also going to see if I can get this post moved to the HiJack Forum. Liz

Your log is in pretty good shape, only a few things to take care of:

These two need to have something added at the end to make them go somewhere. Your R0 has this one: http://www.pinelakemusic.com/ you could use that again or use www.google.com or www.yahoo.com or any number or others. Your home page is a good choice for that.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Make sure all browsers and windows are closed except for hijackthis and put a check against the following and click 'fix checked';

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/2048dde...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Reboot and post another log. That one should be clean and I'll tell you how to tighten your security to avoid popups. Liz

Thanks! I wasn't aware that there was a Hijack section now. I appreciate you getting the thread moved where it belonged.

I will add the homepage to those to R0 lines. pinelakemusic is our company site, so that will work for that.

As soon as I can get access to this machine for a few minutes, I'll make those changes and post another log.

Good and as far as tighten your security:

Adaware SE and Spybot 1.3. These two should be on every one's computer and updated and run a minimum of 2 x's a week.

For defense, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard should be on your computer and updated 2 times a week.

Everyone should have a firewall and a/v, and I am NOT talking about the firewall that is part of SP2 but a seperate one. You can get too many free a/v's to pay for one so go with a free one.

SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard are all in my signature. They are FREE.

Go to www.majorgeeks.com and then to the antivirus and firewall sections to check out those. If you sort by license, you will find the free ones. Liz

============================

I do need instructions on how to change those two registry lines. I found the locations listed, but didn't see a place for "Local Page" in either local machine or current user. Any help there would be appreciated.....I don't do much registry editing so I'm not too familiar with it.

The user of this machine is usually extremely careful, but he hit "enter" in a seperate program at the exact same time a popup hit and apparently said "yes" to something and that's when the junk started.

I've run Adaware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and a couple of others I found free and had about 100 or so hits, which were all delted/quarentined.

As for firewall, this is a company machine on a network, so we're fairly well protected but can't screw around with that too much as it would also affect our network settings.
I think the problem is that he was on a site that caused the popup and accidentlally clicked a yes that installed something and it all went down the toilet from there.

Okay, I'm back, I had to find something out...We are just going to remove the R0 entries instead of fixing them.

I wish you could have a better firewall but you do with what you can.

As for the guy who clicked where he shouldn't...tell him NOT TO!!! LOL

Okay, here we go:

Make sure all browsers and windows are closed except for hijackthis and put a check against the following and click 'fix checked';

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Reboot, and that should be it. since you log is clean except for thos two items.,If you want to post another one to be sure, I'll check it one more time. Liz

Not sure what else to try here. The underlying problem is still there. The system mostly behaved the rest of the day yesterday, but came in this morning and there were a load of popups and the machine was completely hung up. Had to do a hard boot to get it back.

There's still some program of some sort running. Might be time for a reload.

OK, here's the log this morning.

===========================

Quite a few things that weren't there yesterday it looks like.

canooten, can you use a popup blocker? And yes, reformatting is an option.

IF you can, try to use Firefox as your alternate browser altho with this being a work computer that may not be possible. IF you are able to use Firefox, let me know and I will help you configure it cause there are plugins you need to go with it.

If you can't use Firefox and just need the popup blocker, here is a list of good ones: http://lists.gpick.com/pages/Ad~PopUp_Tools.htm

I'm sorry it's still reoccuring, I wish we could have found the problem. Liz
