System has mysterious popup on taskbar and locks up for a few mins sometimes, not always...

Not seeing anything in the log...

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
    [*] Click on see report. Then click Save report

Please explain this popup. Is it a quick popup that opens/closes quickly but has no name attached to it? Kinda looks like a program window that opened and closed quickly?

PC is an HP or Compaq?
 
The popup doesn't actually pop up on the desktop, just a program marker on the taskbar flashes real quick and is gone again. Looks like a program running fast in dos. No program name or anything. Just the blue bar white box blank program look. You know like a icon missing it's program. Computer is a gateway.
 
Ok, did all of that and nothing came up... says I'm clean as a whistle. Don't know what to say other than this is REALLY annoying. Whatever it is must be harmless, but I would still like to figure out what it is anyhow. And the system hangup at startup is the most annoying thing. It boots all the way into windows, loads everything in the startup que. Then when you go to run any program it just makes the pretty mouse pointer move. Hit ctrl-alt-del and still just the mousy lets you know that it is trying to do anything, then 3-5 mins later everything pops up, task manager, any programs you were trying to run ect... And you can never tell when it is going to do this. Sometimes it will 3 startups in a row, then not for a day maybe, then once, then ect ect ect... ARRRRGGGHHH!
 
Yes, stop using Internet Explorer if you are. Download and use Mozilla Firefox only. Its very secure. Also, I notice you have Norton AV and Avg. I would recommend uninstalling, Norton AV and using only Avg. It uses alot less resources and works better.

Also go to start/run andn type "msconfig" and shut down any startup programs besides AV and video card etc. Reboot and see if your hang up is gone.
 
First...what I'm seeing in the log doesn't match with what your telling me. If this is a Gateway PC...why do I see HP programs running? It may be Gateway is using HP's updating crap.

Was this hard drive in an HP PC? Anyway..to stop that box from poping on the "taskbar" try this......

Click START>>RUN>>Type in msconfig. Once that loads..open the "Startup" tab. Scroll down the list and uncheck this entry if found.

This is HP's update manager which malfunctions on Windows XP and checks for updates all the time which is what that unnamed box is that pops up.

As for your "hang" problem...you may want to ask about it in the Windows forum. Open up your "Event Viewer" in Administrator Tools and check for any errors. It may be faulting a program thats trying to load.
 
The HP stuff is because of my scanner and printer. I have now disabled all of them since I really don't need them resident anyhow. I just left them in there because I sometimes leave for lengthy periods and it keeps thing updated for my fam. I REALLY like firefox! So much for IE. I stuck with it because I never cared much for Netscape... I dropped a couple other things I had resident that I didn't feel the need for too. Like the 2 seperate hotkey drivers that I had in there. Really only need the one.... :-0. Don't know if I solved the lockup prob yet but I haven't seen the popup lately. Thanx guys. Any recommendations for firewalls and AV software. What seems to be the universal choice of the experts?
