Hi followshell and welcome to the Computer Technology Forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be happy to assist you with your problem.

Whilst I am looking at your log please do a couple of things for me. First I notice that you have both Avast and AVG anti-virus systems installed on your computer, no problem with that as one might well find things that the other does not BUT it is very important to only ever have one of them running at any one time, so please switch one of them off.

Secondly I note that you are running HijackThis from a zipped folder, because HijackThis is both for Analysis and Repair it is essential that it runs from within its own folder, this is because it makes backups of the repairs in case there is a need for reversal of the procedure. Please make a folder in your C drive or on your desktop and move HijackThis to it.

Once you have done both of these things then please post an up-to-date log.

Back as soon as I have fully analysed your log, you do have infections!

Start the Clean-Up

Back again,

You have a couple of doubtful programs, some resource hogs, an out-of-date Java installation and a Vundo infection.

We will deal with the Vundo first.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
• You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
• When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log from its new location please.

Second Phase Clean

We will start with a check of programs running on your computer and then continue the cleaning process.

1. Please open HijackThis and click the Open the Misc Tools section button

• Click the Open Uninstall Manager button
• On the next screen click Save List button
• Accept the default name of uninstall_list.txt and save it to your desktop
• Please post the uninstall_list.txt in your reply
• Leave HijackThis open as it is used again later

3. You are running MyWay, which is not recommended and you have your search pages to Yahoo redirected via clientapps, this redirection ensures that anything that you search for is also known by and used by clientapps for adware. Looking at My Way read the quote box information:

Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. My Web Search also known as the My Way Speedbar is the Internet Explorer toolbar part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, Cursor Mania, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal. The toolbar allows easy access to search engine results and a 404 Error Redirector called My Total Search among other things to your browser. This is not to be confused with the IBIS Web Search toolbar. MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.

The MySearch and MyWay variants have been bundled with Grokster, Morpheus, WeatherBug, and software from mgshareware.com. MySearch has also been installed by the FavoriteMan parasite.
The MyWeb variant is bundled with software (Popswatter, SmileyCentral, My Mail Stamp) from “Fun Web Products” (also the same people as MyWay). For the MyWeb variant, be sure to also remove ‘Fun Web Products Easy Installer’.

4. We will now get rid of MyWay and some of the HijackThis entries

• If you decided to ditch MyWay then click Start and select Control Panel
• Choose Add/Remove Programs and then Uninstall this program (if present):

• With all other windows closed, in HijackThis, click Back and then Scan
• Place a checkmark beside each of these entries if present:

• After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked.
• When it finishes, exit HJT.

5. I now need you to ensure that any hidden and system files are visible to the system.

• Select the Start button and from the available options
• Right-click the My Computer option.
• Select Explore from the drop-down menu
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. from the new window
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders by clicking in the check-box to its left
• Remove the check against Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option, again by clicking the check-box to its left.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.
• Windows does not search for hidden or system files by default so
  * Click the Start button and select Search choosing For Files or Folders
  * From the dialogue box select All files and folders and at the bottom select More Advanced Options
  * Place selection ticks in the check-boxes for
  - * - Search system folders
  - * - Search hidden files and folders
  - * - Search subfolders
• Close the search dialogue box

6. The next thing I would like you to do is to upload one of your files for investigation by Malware experts, the file is TaskMgr.exe which is known as a standard Microsoft file, but I can see no reason why it should be running from the path shown in your log, as such it could be a nasty. We will start by looking at the directory and the file and then upload it for further investigation.

• Please navigate to C:\ and right-click the i386 folder.
• Select Properties and under the General tab make a note of:
  * Size
  * Contains Number of files and folders
• Select Cancel
• Open that i386 folder and locate TASKMGR.EXE and right-click on it.
  * Select Properties and make a note of the file details especially Company Name.
  * Select Cancel
• Please pass these details in your reply

7. Please go to Jotti for a scan on TaskMgr.exe

• Click Browse at the top of the page
• In the new window that opens, navigate to C:\I386\
• Locate TaskMgr.exe and click Open
• In the web page click Submit
• If the Service load: is not at maximum then you will get a response fairly quickly, if it is at maximum then delay your submission until later, it should not be a long wait.

8. Now please repeat the process at VirusTotal

• Click Browse at the top of the page
• In the new window that opens, navigate to C:\I386\
• Locate TaskMgr.exe and click Open
• In the web page click Send
• This time you will be sent an email containing the results

9. Please post the results of both scans back in this thread

10. The next tool to use is a cleaning tool, please download CCleaner

• Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
• Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
• Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
  * Add Desktop Shortcut
  * Automatically check for updates etcÂ…
• Click Install
• To setup CCleaner click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
• From the menu on the left select Options
• Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
• Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
• Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
  * Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
  * Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
  * Under System tick all boxes
  * There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
• From the menu on the left click on Analyze
• When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
• Close CCleaner

11. The final tool we will use this session is Ewido Download the Ewido security suite here the suite is fully functional on a trial basis

• When installing, under Additional Options REMOVE the checks on Install background guard and Install scan via context menu
• Launch ewido, there should be a big e icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update; click the OK button. The program will now go to the main screen
• On the left hand side of the main screen click Update and then click Start update
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• When the update has completed click on scanner
  * Click on Settings
  * Confirm that all check boxes are ticked
  * and scan every file is selected
  * Click OK
• Exit ewido for now.

I suggest that you print out the following instructions or highlight the remainder and save to a WordPad file on your desktop as you will no longer have an internet connection until we have finished this phase of the clean up

12. Physically disconnect your computer from the internet by unplugging the lead.

13. Reboot the computer into safe mode using a clean boot sequence

• Select the Start button and Turn Off Computer
• Select the Turn Off option, when the computer has shut down switch off the power supply.
• After 10 seconds, restore the power supply and switch on the computer
  * Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
  * As soon as the BIOS loads, or a single Beep is heard then begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
  * If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
  * Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
• When in Safe mode you will have your desktop with the word ‘SafeÂ’ in the 4 corners.

14. To reduce the chance of AntiSpyware interfering with the fixes, please stop all antispyware on your computer. If you right-click on the icon in the systems tray you will find an option to ‘exit’. When you reboot, this will all return to normal.

15. We will now run Ewido

• Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
• Open the programme by clicking on the large e
  * Select the Update option from the left and then Start Update on the right.
• When the update has completed click on scanner
  * Click on Settings
  * Confirm that all check boxes are ticked
  * and scan every file is selected
  * Click OK
• Select Complete system scan and let the program scan the machine
• If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
  * Select Remove as the action
  * Place a check against Perform action with all infections.
• Click on the Save Report button at the bottom of the screen and save the file to the desktop.
• Repeat the scan until there is no detected malware
• When you have the clean result from Ewido Exit Ewido

• The uninstall_list.txt saved to your desktop
• The Ewido log
• The information concerning the C:\i386 directory
• The reports on TaskMgr.exe, Properties, Jotti & VirusTotal
