cool.scr virus

[mass0ver]

My father's computer is controlled by this virus. when the computer is restarted, or it sits for a while(not sure what triggers it), a box comes up saying "AOL needs you to re-update your information. Please give us your cc, birthday, ect.". Task manager is disabled, and I have to manually enable it using registry editor. I see a odd file named cool.scr in the task manager, so I end the process and search the computer. I delete 4 files. 2 named cool.scr, located at C:\, the other at C:\windows. Then there's 2 prefetch files that I also delete.

I figured this would solve it, heh, if it were only so simple.

Sometimes, when I reboot the computer, I'll get an error saying "failed to load cool.scr". Other times the program mysteriously finds its way back and i have to repeat this process over and over again to delete the file.

I've run AVG anti-virus, spy bot, and followed everything on osiris's guide(msconfig cleaner, cc cleaner, cleanup!), and it wont go away. I've checked google, there was some info, nothing that helped me out too much.

Also, my family's router just died today, luckily we had an extra one to keep our internet up. All of the other computers in the house can connect to the new network fine. My father's computer seems to be having trouble, and I assume it's due to this bug. However, with our old network and router, his computer had no trouble. For this problem, all I knew to do was to ipconfig from the cmd prompt. I can see that the computer isn't getting a default gateway address, or a connection specific DNS suffix. It gets a Auto-configuration IP address and a Subnet Mask though. Not sure if it's any help, but I figured i'd add it in.

Well, I should've figured that one out myself...

I do believe the virus is gone, however I'm still unsure about this internet problem; deleting the virus hasn't fixed it. Not sure if it's still the right section of the forums...but I'd appreciate any help nonetheless.

edit-- if I try to use windows repair, it tells me that it can not renew my IP address. again, not sure if it helps, just letting you know some things as I try to troubleshoot myself

Uninstall Viewpoint

Try this

Go to a CMD Prompt

ipconfig /release

then

ipconfig /renew

That didn't work in the cmd prompt. It told me "unable to connect to the DHCP server" or something like that.

More bad news though...it's back! I left the computer alone for probably like 30 minutes, came back and saw "AOL needs your updated information". This time though, the box didn't pop up asking me to enter our info. Task manager is still disabled though. I'm gonna reboot right after I type this to see if the box comes up when I reboot. I did notice something in the corner of the screen titled "form 1". It's probably related.

edit--after the reboot, the box came up and prompted me into enter info again. argg

Didn't delete the cool.scr files yet, figured I'd post this and get some more professional assistance first.

Do you need to use AOL? If not uninstall and delete all AOL entries from hijackthis

Next go to the registry and look for cool.scr and delete all files that come up but make sure you delete only those files.

If you can get into msconfig make sure you disable everything except for your antivirus.

If you cant run msconfig then skip it.

Next go to start, run type in services.msc, press enter. Look for SCR or cool.scr or what is associated to the file/service and disable it.

Then reboot and scan your system with combofix

amd then post combofixs log and post a new hijackthis log

My father choses to use AOL, even though I bug him all the time how terrible it is and how it's a waste of money.

I deleted some things in the registry, I think they had something to do with the search function.
I disabled everything in msconfig except avg
There was nothing in services.msc for me to delete.

It's gone...........for now

Still stumped on the internet though.

Well that looks better.

You should run CCleaner again along with CCleaners Registry Cleaner and then Cleanup!.

Make sure System Restore is turned off since it usually harbors viruses, malware, etc unless you really want it.

You should also do a search for that C:\cool.scr file and make sure you check Show Hidden Files and Folders under Folder Options>View via Control Panel. Reboot and then scan again just to make sure it didnt come back. If it doenst then you should be good to go.

There was a file that was hidden. Deleted it, rebooted, re-scanned and found nothing, now just hoping for the best.

Still without internet though. Hmmm....

edit--

fixed it. was a problem with my wireless card and the interaction with the router I guess. I just used the built in windows wireless instead of the lynksys program, and it works.

Some things to try:

Reset your router by pressing the reset button if it has one, you may need a pen or paper clip, hold it for 15 seconds, then unplug the router and plug back in.

Can you ping Yahoo! or your own IP address? What is the TTL?

You can repair your network connection by clicking the network adapter

Try reinstallaing, update NIC drivers

Open services.msc via start>run Make sure DHCP is running and started. If it is, stop it and then start it again
