Learning java

I have decided to start with programing java ...i have done html but i would like to get into higher lvl programing. I was wondering how to go about learning this...book(if so which one) or any other ways.

jumping from html, which isnt really a programming language, right up to java isnt the best idea i would learn visual basic first. are you talking about javascript?
