A single chip for wireless devices that is multifunctional, more energy efficient, and space saving is in the works. Researchers in California have been working from Joe Mitola's "Software-Defined Radio" (SDR) concept.

The concept is based on converting all incoming radio signals into digital 1s and 0s. It is suggested that this chip will be in handheld wireless devices in the next three to five years.

I was having trouble seeing the connection between a SDR and why the mobile industry would be interested in such a concept. It is explained the chip will "provide so much more flexibility in the functions of a single device, ranging from using the same cell phone all over the world, to having a PDA unlock your car door." Pretty amazing huh?
