Gizmodo just posted the legal letter they received from apple requesting they send back "their device". They didn't name it or anything, but this definitively confirms that this is indeed an apple product and very likely the exact 4th gen phone.

Hopefully the iPad 2.0 can get this flat back-piece so that when I am typing on it it quits sliding around all the time! I'm seriously sick of it but I guess I have little keyboard piece so I have to carry around two things now.

^^ That would be my guess. Most likely they are trying to divert attention from the Droid Incredible which is launching in a week or so.

WOW apple finally ditching the stupid rounded corners and going for a more practical square corners? too bad it's with a phone instead of with a device like the ipad
