Developing A Point of sale application for Handheld terminals(Mobile PoS)

Hi All

I need help from the community , I am a functional consultant for Retail industry and in the process of developing Mobile point of sale application which can be installed on Hnad held terminals and run. Traditionally the team with which I am working suggest VB, But I want understandt any other technology which is platform independent(AJX,J@ee). But not sure about this since this technologies are heavy on GUI. If go with VB I must suggest clients to buy VB licenses and Database.

Can anyone of you guys suggest any Application & database for this.

Can you work with Flash? That has the GUI down pretty good, but i dont know how functional it is.
