What is the general feel about comparing MS Share Point to some of the web 2.0 services.

My concern being that users are never happy with vanilla applications they always want sprinkles or a cherry on top. Does anyone have experience with or modifying these 'new' web 2.0 services?

I would believe that MS Share Point there are developers galore who could quickly modify the program to meet our user needs while we got up to speed on developing it.

Collaboration is a sticky subject IMHO.

With my corp. we looked at what we wanted our users to be able to do, what we already had in place, and what would be compatible/easily extended to work with existing infrastructure. We already had a meeting system, Calendering was handled by our Exchange server/Outlook. IM/Presence notification is handled by Windows Messenger. What we were looking for was a Wikilog, but one that could be integrated with LDAP/AD for user control. What we finally decided on was Confluence, by Atlassian. It's open source and free for non-profit (no support except for online), otherwise, it is fairly cheap. You have access to the full source code, and it is extendible. Media, documents, etc can be shared. It is pretty vanilla, but as long as there is a WYSIWYG editor, I think the sprinkles and cherry come from training the users and letting the users take the reins on where the content is headed.

Again this is just my opinion
