NVIDIA's Fermi GF100 Facts & Opinions

For those of you that missed it, we posted our NVIDIA's Fermi GF100 Facts & Opinions article yesterday. The company gave us a look into the GF100's inner workings, the specifics behind the architecture and how that relates to gaming.

We have come away more excited about GF100 (Fermi) than we have ever been. The design of the Fermi architecture is very innovative and NVIDIA engineers get big kudos for thinking outside of the box, or in this case, the traditional graphics pipeline. This thing has got several magazine covers in its future and an engineering award or two for sure.

this article confirms that the rumoured videos where authentic !!! meh ima still be getting a hd5870, if the gf100 is faster il just sell

I didn't see anything about that. looks a lot like what Anandtech had yesterday. Only difference is hardocp posted the slides that Nvidia used and anandtech made their own graphics.

"Rumored Fermi Videos" - Yes, these are in fact authentic videos of a GF100 triple card setup in action. 3 X GPGPU for Ray Tracing Demo, Single GPU for all others. The systems are all 3.2GHz Intel Core i7 boxes and the comparison box being used in the FarCry 2 benchmark shots are of a GTX 285. The videos were leaked accidentally by PCPer.com.

Fudzilla - Partners to get Fermi cards in February

Our sources are whispering that Nvidia has promised Fermi chips and Fermi boards in February. The final specification should be closed one of these days if it wasn't closed already, and the partners can start planning the final cards.

The first batch is naturally controlled by Nvidia and partners will only get to buy cards, but at later date someone might even dare to make its own design. This is naturally very unlikely due to big cost and the fact that Nvidia gets too scared that something might go wrong.

The mainstream Femi will end up in partners' hands and they will manufacture these chips on their own, but this is still at least one quarter after the original GF100 Geforce single chip high-end card.

Nvidia partners barely have anything interesting to sell, and marketing wise they have nothing to advertise due to obvious inferiority compared to ATI's offer. Hopefully this might change with the introduction of Fermi, but again, we expect shortages of these cards as they should be very desirable. - fudzilla.com

Yeah, should be a PITA to get hands on one but hopefully this is true though...would be nice to see a Fermi come to the shelves next month.

When do review sites and stuff usually get cards to try out? A couple of weeks before they hit retail? I have no idea how that works...

Nvidia's cranial-rectal inversion status with partners *OMG!* using something besides Nvidia's standard design hurts them more than they care to know. Nvidia make take the speed crown with Fermi, but they could really deal a hurting if they would loosen up enough to let their partners get creative and release some nice improvements. Of course, when you can barely get the thing to work as-is you wuld be scared to let anyone tinker with it anyway...

Review sites that are generally favorable to Nvidia (read: sold out) get cards before release to put through the paces and have reviews ready at launch. Any other review sites (read: at least partially impartial) have to wait in line and hope for the best.
