Last August we brought you exclusive confirmation that abit was exiting the mainboard market. The plan at the time was to move into the consumer electronics market with products like digital picture frames and mobile internet devices.

Well it looks like the global recession has put paid to those plans. Sources at South East Asian distributors have told us that parent company USI has run out of patience and decided to pull out of the channel market entirely.

The whole of abit is now in the process of liquidation, we are told, and the process is expected to be completed in around a month.

There certainly doesn't seem to be any sales and marketing operation any more. Marketing director Thore Welling sent us an email early this morning in which he said: "After 20 years in the market the abit brand now bids farewell, so it's also time for me now to lock the doors of the marketing department. That's it for good now."

We also rang abit's office in Holland and were told there was no marketing department. We did speak to someone in the finance department who didn't want to reveal her name. She confirmed that not only has abit not been selling mainboards since the start of the year, but has stopped selling any products whatsoever and the office is only being kept going to handle warranties.

Honestly Abit was my first choice for mobo's. It's sad to see such a good company go. They worked on so many boards but could not seem to deliver (mass produce). They had a stellar x48 max that was suppose to come out and dominate but never did.

I had a abit mobo for a while an loved it, sadly it is missing some ware in the united states postal service, I know ste had problems with there RMA department.

No mine was the AN-M2 HD the weird one with VGA, HDMI an DVI on the mobo it was prity nice as without a graphics card I could run dual monitors, the only complaint I made about that board was I couldn't run 3 monitors of the mobo even though I had the connectors and some people could it was down to the revision of the mobo apparently.

Why can't ECS/PC Chips go out of business? Why does a decent company have to kick it?

Bah.

E machines an EI systems use them heavily as do a lot of mom an pop shops where quality isn't as important as getting it cheep.
