Well as the title says, what makes an OS more stable then others? for example what makes Linux more stable then XP?

Obvious answer would be less crashing and lock ups. But thinking about this a bit more, a stable OS could be described as one that can have many core pieces of software removed and still have a functioning OS. i.e. in Linux the GUI can be fully removed etc. Other ways it could be described is the amount of cycles and processes are required to do simple tasks. There is a picture on the internet that describes the amount of processes and time XP with IIS and Linux with Apache needed. As expected the Linux one had around have the mess of a picture than windows had.

Anyways, a stable os for is: Not screwing up in any way, shape or form, no matter what I am doing or how intensely it is.

So my Current OS would not be stable, but Im to lazy to reinstall, Ill just what for new build.

If you really want your system to be stable you have to have a physics processor in SLI with a DMC Flux-Capacitor running at 1.21 gigaflops. These can typically be found at Best Buy.

If you wanna increase your stability on a budget, you'll need a high-definition laser mouse. This reduces the amount of processing they CPU has to do when decrypting the information sent from a mouse. A normal optical mouse or trackball mouse sends too much information for a normal CPU to handle and in turn gives you poor pointing performance and bottlenecks your PC. An HD mouse relieves this bottlenecking and therefore gives your computer the capacity to be stable. It would also help to have a friend swing a ball-peen hammer into your frontal lobe.

Well, you could think of stability in terms of malware (viruses, spyware and adware).

For example, there are more viruses on the Windows platform than there is on Mac OS X. So you could say that Mac OS X is more stable than Windows because there's fewer malware.

A factor as why there's more malware on the Windows platform is because of the market share of operating systems (Windows having greater dominance). Obviously it would be more favourable for virus writers to target the Windows platform.
